Opioids are substances that act on opioid receptors to produce morphine-like effects. Opioids are most often used medically to relieve pain, and by people addicted to opioids.

  • Opioids are highly addictive.
  • When abused, even a single large dose can cause severe respiratory failure, which can lead to death.
  • Exposure to opioids in utero increases the risk of defects in the baby’s brain, heart, spine and abdominal wall.
  • Taking too much opioid medication can result in overdose and death.
  • Combining opioids with alcohol, sleep aids or muscle relaxers increase

What We Do & How We Do It

Purpose:

  • To increase knowledge on the history and science of addiction
  • To increase awareness that prescription opioids can be addictive and dangerous
  • To reduce stigma associated with Opioid Use Disorder (OUD)
  • To educate on safe storage and disposal

Mission:

Conduct prevention activities that educate and support individuals, families, and community; which is critical for maintaining both individual and community health.

The program offers educational training/presentations on the following topics:

  • Heroin
  • Fentanyl
  • Stigma
  • Narcan
