SEXUALLY TRANSMITTED INFECTIONS AWARENESS MONTH

(April 18, 2025, Salisbury, MD) April is recognized by the American Sexual Health Association as Sexually Transmitted Infections (STI) Awareness Month to promote awareness about prevention, testing, and treatment of sexually transmitted infections. STIs are infections that pass from person to person during sexual contact.

STIs can affect anyone who is sexually active. Almost half of new STI cases occur among teenagers and young adults aged 15-24. Prevention is a vital step for reducing STI rates among young people. Awareness and education can help them make the best decisions for their health. Abstinence is the only 100% effective way to prevent STIs. For young people who are sexually active prevention includes:

  • Abstaining from sexual activity
  • Regular STI testing
  • Reducing the number of sex partners
  • Using barrier methods like condoms and dental dams

For more information, visit cdc.gov/sti/prevention. The Wicomico County Health Department provides local STI testing and treatment. Call 410-543-6943 to make an appointment.  For general information on STI’s go to wicomicohealth.org or find us on Facebook and Instagram (WicomicoHealth).
